Starting chips look impressive, but starting big blinds and level length tell you much more about how a tournament will play.
Convert chips to big blinds
If you start with 30,000 chips and the big blind is 300, you start 100 big blinds deep. If the big blind is 600, the same stack is only 50 big blinds.
Level length
Longer levels give players more hands before the blinds rise. Two tournaments with identical starting stacks can feel completely different if one uses 15-minute levels and the other uses 40-minute levels.
Antes
Antes add forced money to each pot and accelerate the cost of waiting. Modern events commonly use a big-blind ante, but always read the specific structure sheet.
What to compare
- Starting big blinds
- Minutes per level
- When antes begin
- Size of blind jumps
- Break schedule
- Late-registration ending level
